I'd never heard the Spit had inertian reel belts before.

Regarding the four cannon spits, I believe some wing configurations could carry four cannons, though it wasn't general practise in the RAF. Is it possible the Russians up guned them? Did they keep the Hispano's on the Spit's or put Russian weapons in?

As there were a lot of original RAF-standart ammo original configuration remained for practice (There was no other way to expend the ammo, as the war was over, and it had no sence to keep it in stores), but for possible future war there were test made that had proven switch to more common Soviet armament as possible without a lot of time and work time lost.
BTW. The didn't use up all the UK and US ammo, so most of it had to be utilized, and it had proven to be a serious problem.
